Michael Phelps

USA

Michael is a swimmer from the United States, an Olympian and an international traveller on the circuit, whose official competitive record spans 17 seasons, 18 years, 14 countries and 101 meets.

His recorded career begins in 1999 in College Park Md, where he raced the 400 individual medley in 4:29.15.

His signature event is the 200 butterfly, his reference distance in butterfly, ahead of the 100 butterfly and 50 butterfly. Butterfly is the backbone of the whole record: 76 meets and 193 recorded swims.

In long course (50 m), he went from 1:56.50 in 2000 to a best of 1:51.51 in 2009 (13th FINA World Championships): 4.99 seconds gained in the 200 butterfly.

He has raced at the Olympic Games level, between 2000 and 2016 (Olympic Games, SYDNEY, AUS and Olympic Games Sydney 2000). A representative mark at that level is 1:52.03 in the 200 butterfly, recorded in long course (50 m). He also appears in world championships, the World Cup circuit, national championships and international meets.

After a 2-year break between 2012 and 2014, he came back to racing and the record picks up again in 2014.

He is a genuinely international swimmer: the official record spans 14 countries (the United States, UNK, Australia, the United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Brazil, China, Spain, Germany and France), including 44 of 101 meets outside the United States.

Those meets span 46 different venues (Omaha, Austin, Indianapolis and Irvine…). He has raced for 5 clubs, led by North Baltimore Aquatic Club, USA Swimming, Benton High School (LA) and Harvard Summer/Club.

The last race on record is dated February 6, 2023. He closes this record with 43 current event personal bests and 127 all-time PB improvements, across 508 verified official swims in competitions governed by U.S. Masters Swimming, World Aquatics and USA Swimming.
