Compare Swim Times with Friends: Social Rankings in Swimming

Quick summary: Compare your times with friends, club and swimmers your age. Rankings filterable by event, course and category, 1v1 challenges with automatic validation, and shared feed. Federated times carry verified badge. Free and ad-free.

The most sustainable motivation doesn't come from comparing yourself with world records: it comes from comparing yourself with real people in your environment. Knowing your lane partner has dropped 0.8 s in the 100 free this month while you've stayed at the same time is concrete, actionable information. Swimer turns that comparison into infrastructure.

Types of comparison available

Verified vs self-reported times

Times imported via USA Swimming, SwimCloud, SwimRankings or RFEN appear with a blue verified badge in the social ranking. Times recorded in personal workouts are visible but distinguishable. This preserves the competitive integrity of the ranking without excluding non-federated swimmers.

How 1v1 challenges work

You launch a challenge specifying event (e.g., 200 free) and deadline (e.g., 7 days). Both of you complete it within any workout and Swimer automatically detects the attempt from the registered session. There's no manual reporting: validation is objective. The winner gets social points and a feed highlight.

Why social rankings accelerate progress

Social rankings activate two powerful psychological levers: social comparison and public commitment. When you know your friends will see your next workout, consistency and intensity rise. Combine this with a plan based on your personal CSS and improvement stops depending solely on willpower.

Granular privacy

You can hide specific events (don't want anyone seeing your 50 fly), appear with an alias instead of your real name or pause your visibility temporarily. Your individual training plan is never visible to friends — only the results you choose to share.

Paso a paso

  1. Add friends to your network — Invite by email or link. Each accepted friend activates automatic comparison on shared events.
  2. Open Rankings → Friends — Here you see the full list filterable by event, course and age. Each friend appears with their best time and position.
  3. Launch a challenge — Pick an event and a friend, set a deadline. Swimer validates the result against your registered sessions.
  4. Compete with your club too — Create or join a team to activate the internal club ranking.

Preguntas frecuentes

How do I compare my times with a specific friend?

Once you add a friend, every event you've both swum appears in a comparative card: your time, their time, gap in seconds and percentage. You can filter by course (LCM / SCM / SCY) and by season.

Are there age-group rankings?

Yes. Swimer generates rankings filterable by age group (juniors, age groups, masters by 5-year brackets). You can see your exact position within your group among friends and globally.

Does it work for non-federated times too?

Yes. Unlike official rankings, the social ranking accepts times recorded in workouts or unofficial tests. To distinguish, federated times carry a verified badge.

Can I challenge someone to a specific event?

Yes. Tap Challenge on any friend's profile and choose the distance and stroke. Both of you have up to 7 days to complete it. Swimer automatically validates the winner.
